My name is Laura McKenna. I was born and raised in Lewistown Montana. I am the youngest of four and my family is the most important thing to me.  I moved to Missoula in 2005 to begin my college career. I completed my general credits here in Missoula and transferred to UM Western to receive a bachelor’s degree in the Science of Early Childhood Development.   Through my early childhood training I have come to realize all of the magical and supporting ways that an adult can help a young child to learn. Each day is a new learning experience for me and the children I spend it with.  I am so fond of young children because of their enthusiasm to learn about the world around them! Every day is full of learning experiences because each day brings something new.

A few things that I believe about early childhood have developed throughout my education. I believe that the curriculum should be based off the day to day interests of the children.  I believe children deserve to be directed to acceptable behavior and not simply be punished for unacceptable behavior.  I believe that hands-on experiences are the best way for children to learn. I feel that children are ‘little explorers’ and should be provided an environment to support this quality.

Spirit at Play is a positive and encouraging place where young children learn. I am excited for my opportunity to work at Spirit at Play because I get to observe and learn from positive and patient people. I love the support system that is present at Spirit at play; the parents, teachers, children, community, and co-workers. I have always loved learning about the Reggio Emilia Philosophy and studying Howard Gardner’s, “Multiple Intelligences”, these philosophies are values that I share with Spirit at Play.

When I am not at Spirit at Play you can find me folfing, hiking, camping, simply exploring Montana’s outdoors, exercising, cooking, going on trips, and spending time with my family and friends.  My favorite time of year in Montana is spring and summer so I soak up every minute of it when it is here!  If there is anything else you would like to know about me, feel free to ask!
